Sailor Galley and Rum Bar brings a breeze of adventure to Mount Maunganui’s scenic beachside, marrying a travel-inspired spirit with a relaxed nautical poise. Here, the compass points to local ingredients and far-flung influences, with specialty rum and polished cocktails setting a confident course for the evening.
The menu favours clarity and brightness: market oysters lifted by a pink peppercorn dressing or a playful tempura kimchi mayo; a classic Gilda that nods to pintxo bars; and a delicate market fish crudo threaded with orange, shaved fennel, citrus oil and capers. Vegetables are no afterthought, from baby cos with pecorino and a verdant green goddess to roasted carrot layered with feta crema, herbs and hazelnut.
Heft arrives in satisfying waves. Buttermilk fried chicken finds swagger with ’nduja butter and pickled celery, while bistro comforts appear as bavette steak with thick-cut fries and Dijon or beer battered market fish with tartare. Larger plates turn decidedly celebratory: porchetta with crackling, pomme purée, fire-roasted apple, sage and jus, or eye fillet enriched by beef cheek, roasted carrot and a red wine jus.
To finish, there is a glazed orange cake with Earl Grey crème anglaise and almond praline, or a warm chocolate fondant with raspberry and ricotta cream. Come early for Captain’s Hour, 3–6pm, when oysters and fried chicken pair neatly with something tall and tropical. Book in, settle your sea legs, and let the evening set sail.
