In the beautiful surrounds of the heritage Masonic House, you'll find kingi, a restaurant that celebrates sustainably caught, grown and gathered food from across Aotearoa, as well as wine from New Zealand and abroad.
Named in honour of the kingfish, kingi works in partnership with the independent fishers, farmers, hunters and growers who share the eatery's values. Each dish on the menu heroes local ingredients and the people who gather and produce them. There's crayfish and pāua from Tora Bay; fish landed at Leigh by Matthieu and the crew at Leigh Fisheries; mussels from the Marlborough Sounds; venison from Fiordland, mushrooms grown at Kumeu, and fresh herbs from the students at Manurewa High School. Going through the menu is like a culinary trip around the country.
The menu at kingi is a testament to the range of New Zealand's produce, with dishes built to let each ingredient taste like the place it came from. Alongside the food, kingi also offers a considered selection of wines, craft beers, spirits and signature cocktails to complement the dining experience.
An open fire sits to one side of the al fresco space, while inside a chandelier designed by Dajiang Tai and Lumenworks shimmers over the dining room like schooling fish. The knowledgeable team of wine and beer enthusiasts are always on hand to suggest pairings for your meal.
The restaurant envisions a brighter future for New Zealand food production, and hopes its food will create a deeper appreciation for the variety around us, making it a lovely place to enjoy the bounty of Aotearoa's coastlines, rivers, paddocks and forests.
